Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Lots of people ask me is it worth paying £2500.00 for a bottle of wine and does the taste justify the price. A difficult question to answer as we have some wine at that price.Well the wine should be of outstanding quality and will be well known but like most things in life you are paying for scarcity as well.
So I really get excited when I find a wine that is outstanding but more affordable. This happened to me last summer when I drove down to Essex to visit an old friend John Sneddon that I had not seen for ages. When I got there I rang the bell and his wife opened the door and beckoned me into the kitchen where John was sat with a few friends drinking some red wine with a really mature Epoisses De Bourgogne on this huge French style wooden table that could have sat twenty. Helo mate he said would you like a glass of red? My mind drifted back to when we were eighteen and a glass of Liebfraumilch or a Cote du Rhone was the order of the day. He duly appeared with a bottle of red and poured me a glass. What do you think he asked? I looked at this dark violet coloured wine in my wine goblet swirled the contents and sniffed:- aromas of ripe blackcurrant, sweet spice red, fruits and cassis came rushing over my senses. Then I drank some, it just blew me away it was so good.
When I got back to the Mussel and Crab I decided to do some research regarding this wine. The wine is Argentinian and if it was French I thought it would command a price tag of around £800.00. It came from one of the best wineries there and was one of there best wines that they produce. Nicolas Catena has produced some outstanding wines with the aid of his Californian winemaker Paul Hobbs who helped establish the legendary Opious 1 winery in California. Robert Parker who is the wine guru of the world in my opinion goes around tasting and scoring wines, gave this wine and vintage 91 points out of a possible 100.
I immediately went out and bought up any stock I could find in this country. We are selling this wine for £65.00 which I think is fantastic value. So if your partner or good friend like a full bodied cabernet sauvignon this is for you. Would go best with lamb or venision in a rich sauce, or one of our char grilled 28 day hung beef steaks.
Why not treat yourself or partner and order a bottle.
